What health concerns are there with this breed?
As with many purebred dogs, there are several genetic health concerns that a breeder must responsibly avoid to maintain the health and integrity of the breed. We have taken careful consideration in choosing our breeding animals and can assure that ours are genetically compatible matings that won't perpetuate an undesirable disease or trait. What home or lifestyle do these dogs require?
I like to say a relatively active one, with people who include their dog into their daily routine. Theses dogs love their people and their play time, and combing the two into activities like agility, or just throwing a frisbee in the backyard. They do require exercise in the form of regular walks and free playtime in the yard, however providing those needs are met, you'll never find a nicer house and family dog. If you invest some time and effort in training , you'll get a wonderful return on your investment with a Miniature American Shepherd. Their tractability and willingness to please is another desirable and endearing attribute.
How much do they shed, and how often should I groom?
The hair these dogs shed is usually in "tufts" in spring when they lose their winter undercoat for a sleek summer coat, and again in fall when they grow back the winter and lose their summer one. If you want to avoid this altogether, weekly grooming is a good idea. Regular appointments with the groomer are a good idea to ensure details like toe nails are trimmed. If you have prior knowledge of doing these things yourself, this experience can provide many bonding and training opportunities for you and your dog.
